Paducah Trainyard was painted during the time Folinsbee was in Paducah, Kentucky working on a mural for the new federal court house and post office. His original conception for the two-painting mural proved controversial with many Paducans, particularly the Women's Club, who did not want to highlight Paducah's gritty industrial complex. Folinsbee reworked his concept for the murals to incorporate two early influential individuals in the town's history (Early Town) and a steam paddle boat on the river (The River). This painting was likely derived from Folinsbee's earlier studies, which focused on Paducah's trainyard roundhouse and mining industries.
