Notes
Study for a larger work exhibited at the National Academy and Corcoran Gallery in 1916, and the Charcoal Club of Baltimore in 1917. The Springfield Republican's critic remarked about the larger work: "[it] faithfully represents the breaking up of the fragile floes and deep sombre tone of the water, all in shadow; and this opposed by the sunlight gilding the shore and the bordering buildings."
