Notes

Study for a larger work, First Log (Solitude) also known as Winter Logging, JFF. 241. In the larger work, Folinsbee flipped the composition horizontally, so that the driver and his team of horses pull their load to the left, rather than the right.

One reviewer of the solo exhibition at the Hillyer Gallery remarked that The First Log "has all the crispness and sparkle of the ideal winter weather." (Hampshire Gazette)
