Notes
John Chapin Brinsmade was the nephew of the founder of the Gunnery School, Frederick Gunn. It was Mr. Brinsmade, along with Elizabeth A. Kempton, the school's art teacher (see JFF.879), who perceived Folinsbee's developing talent as an artist. Mr. Brinsmade allowed the young artist to work outside the regular school curriculum with a local painter, Herbert Faulkner. Mr. Brinsmade died suddenly two weeks after the portrait was completed.
