Notes
Sheep was probably painted during the winter or early spring before Folinsbee went to Woodstock to study with Birge Harrison and John Carlson, but it shows that he was already beginning to paint landscapes with an attention to light and atmosphere, and with the kind of restricted, tonal palette that Harrison favored. The small sketch also represents a midpoint in Folinsbee's early technical development, between his earliest work with Jonas Lie and his future studies in Woodstock.
