"In 1926, when many Americans became convinced that Prohibition was immoral, the Centurions, who had gathered for their New Year's party, registered their protest against Prohibition by solemnly breaking their porcelain punch bowl. They then commissioned Paul Manship to create one as ornately liturgical as the Delphic Sibyl's tripod. The Manship Bowl, impressive as it is, does not weigh quite as much as it appears to here, nor does the Club's staff handle it with quite such operatic ineptitude. But dramatic license is entirely proper in this little painting, which is one of 17 insider's glimpses of life in the Century that John Folinsbee painted and gave to his club."--A.
