Notes

Canal Bridge, painted during Folinsbee's first summer in New Hope, was rejected by Robert Macbeth, of Macbeth Gallery, for appearing to be more like Lathrop and less like Folinsbee. Macbeth had earlier consigned paintings by Folinsbee because he liked the vigorous brushwork and high-keyed color that the artist employed during the summer of 1915, probably while he was painting in Silvermine, an artist colony near New Canaan, Connecticut, where Daniel Putnam Brinely had recently settled.
