Cook remarked that "The 1964 portrait of the New Hope artist Edward Redfield, done when Redfield was in his nineties, reveals the character of this robust individual who, though no longer an active painter, grew all his own vegetables, hooked rugs, and drove himself everywhere, including the all-day trip to his summer place in Boothbay, Maine." (Cook 1994, 127)
