Notes

In a June 1990 letter to Pat Wormser, who had just purchased the painting from Newman Galleries in Philadelphia, Peter G. Cook identified its subject and remembered that Paper Mill Winter was "painted in about 1938-1940...I'm not exactly sure of the date, as Joan and I were away at that time...[but] that's about as close as we can come." Given the stylistic qualities of the painting, the date may be slightly later, and closer to 1943-45 when the larger version was painted, but as Folinsbee had discontinued logging most of his landscapes by this period, it is difficult to give a definitive date to this smaller canvas.
