Notes
La Rolanderie was the hotel where Folinsbee and his family during their summer in Bourre. The interior courtyard scene is an unusual one for the artist, as he generally preferred to capture the broad, sweeping valley in which the village is nestled, or scenes along the banks of the Cher River. However, the closed and intimate space of the courtyard provided Folinsbee with an opportunity to experiment with his compositional design as well as the play of light and shadow on the fountain, building, and garden.
