The New York Sun remarked: "In 'Light on the Sea' Mr. Folinsbee hardly seems as much at home with his subject, though the blending of the color of sky and water, and distant shore is very harmonious. This artist's method of work is broad and modern, the color being laid in very loosely, but the effect is essentially refined."
